Success has no age—or gender—limit

Our second annual 50 Over 50 EMEA list curates the founders, business and political leaders, scientists and vanguards leading the way throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

These 50 inspiring women prove that success really has no age limit.

Five Things We Learned

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is stepping down. Shocking New Zealand and much of the wider world, Ardern appeared to cite burnout as the reason for ending her five-year tenure. “I am human; politicians are human. We give all that we can for as long as we can. And then it’s time.”

Next-generation wind turbines can double up as EV chargers. American manufacturer Kohilo Wind’s latest cyclone turbines can generate both electricity and hydrogen at the same time and even include a built-in charging station for electric vehicles. The cyclone design is does away with unsightly blades and is bird friendly.

Cosmetic surgery is on the rise, with tech and Hollywood at the center of it. Surgical procedures rose by 54% in the U.S. alone in 2021, fueled by Hollywood’s increasingly competitive (and unrealistic) beauty standards. Thanks to new technologies, treatment costs are also falling.

E-scooters could disappear from the streets of Paris. A city-wide referendum could see scooters banished for good from the city. Mayor Anne Hidalgo is said to be in favor of a ban.

Italy’s most wanted Mafia boss arrested after 30 years on the run. Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra’s alleged leader Matteo Messina was arrested in Palermo while undergoing medical treatment.

The Good

Pfizer will offer its entire portfolio of drugs and vaccines at non-profit prices to the world’s poorest. Up to 1.2 billion people could benefit from the expanded program, which includes around 500 different antibiotics, medicines and vaccines.

The Bad

The world’s oldest person dies at age 118. French nun Lucile Randon, better known as Sister André, died in her sleep in Toulon, France. She was also the oldest known Covid-19 survivor, after contracting the virus in 2021, aged 116.
