ALL IN Recognizes The Most Engaged Campuses For College Student Voting

Civic Nation

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is honored to announce the recipients for the inaugural ALL IN Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting. ALL IN recognizes participating colleges and universities that have made concerted efforts to increase nonpartisan college student voter registration, education, and turnout efforts, and to ensure equitable access to the polls.

Campuses that are recognized have met four requirements: participate in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge; share their 2020 NSLVE Reports with their campus voting data with ALL IN, develop and submit a 2022 Action Plan with ALL IN; and, their institution has a current signatory to ALL IN’s Higher Education Presidents’ Commitment to Full Student Voter Participation.

394 institutions have earned the Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting recognition. This year’s recipients span 44 states and the District of Columbia and include a diverse group of institutions, including 94 Minority-Serving Institutions, 7 HBCUs, 63 Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and 68 community colleges. The full list of institutions earning this recognition is available here.

“ALL IN created this new recognition to honor campuses for their efforts to increase student voter participation in the 2022 midterm election. Despite ongoing impacts to campus staffing and funding from the COVID-19 pandemic, these campuses have continued to put in the work to ensure that their students are informed and confident voters,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.

Three of the 394 institutions are highlighted below:

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a public HBCU that joined ALL IN in 2017 and earned the 2022 Most Engaged Campus Recognition. North Carolina A&T State University earned the 2022 Highly Established Action Plan recognition and has had a campus-wide voting coalition since 2016 that includes student-driven efforts. They focus on cross-campus strategies with the support of nonpartisan nonprofit partner organizations to share communication and host programming every semester whether there is an election or not.

Another institution that has earned the Most Engaged Campus recognition is The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), which is a public institution that joined ALL IN in 2017. In 2020, TCNJ earned a Platinum Seal from ALL IN for their voting rate. Their campus voting group, TCNJ Votes!, has existed for seven years and has developed a campus voting website. TCNJ also has a Canvas module for faculty to use in classes about voting. Furthermore, TCNJ sends emails to students to remind them to register and to vote. TCNJ’s President, Kate Foster, serves on the ALL IN Presidents Council. This year, TCNJ hosted a Walk to the Polls and co-hosted the 2022 New Jersey Campus Voting Summit with the New Jersey Department of State.

College of the Canyons, a Hispanic Serving Institution and community college in Valencia, California, is also among the inaugural class of the Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting recipients. College of the Canyons serves as a county-wide voting location and hosted a Party at the Polls to encourage student voting. They have also created voting-specific social media accounts and have sent an email to students from the faculty director about voting. College of the Canyons has 25 students involved in their Engage the Vote Action Team working to promote nonpartisan college student democratic engagement.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is proud of the work that these 394 institutions have done across the nation to earn themselves the honor of the 2022 Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting. Our analysis shows that campuses that make intentional efforts to engage students to be voters have higher campus voter turnout rates. These campuses have made nonpartisan college student democratic engagement a vital part of their campus culture and are thanked for their continued efforts to promote democracy.
