Updated Nov 14, 2022, 12:14pm EST

Topline

The suspect in a shooting that left three people dead and two wounded at the University of Virginia late Sunday night has been taken into custody, authorities said.

Key Facts

The suspect, who was identified as student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., was taken into custody, police said during a press conference late Monday morning.

Jones is being held on three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony, university officials said.

The campus was on lockdown for nearly 12 hours after police and university officials urged people to shelter in place as authorities searched for Jones, whom they described as “armed and dangerous.”

Three University of Virginia football players—Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry—were killed in the shooting, university officials confirmed Monday.

Two other victims were injured and remain hospitalized, according to the university, with one in good condition and the other in critical condition.

Crucial Quote

“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send,” UVA President Jim Ryan Ryan wrote in a statement on the shooting. “I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia.”

Key Background

UVA officials said the shooting took place on a bus carrying students back to campus after a field trip to see a play for a class. Jones was listed as a player on the school’s football team in 2018, according to Reuters. Monday classes were cancelled, and the university’s shelter-in-place order was lifted at 10:30 a.m. after “a thorough search” of the campus.
