There is no one-size-fits-all for becoming an entrepreneur or business owner, but there are things you can do to cut your learning curve in half. Hiring a business coach and/or mentor whose been through the learning pains can help you cut yours exponentially. Maybe you've never thought of hiring a business coach or haven't seen the need for it, but it can truly be a game changer for not only you but your company as well. And it can fast-track your success.

Breaking away from the standard 9-to-5 to become your own boss can be terrifying. You don't know where to start, and you're not sure what to do. You may have never even heard of KPIs before or implementing an accountability chart within your company. There is a list of things that can stop you dead in your tracks and that's exactly where a business coach can come in handy.

Business coaches are seasoned professionals who have the proper tools to sift through and prioritize what's important to ensure your entrepreneurial journey is a successful one. A great coach can help with your business, your mindset, your leadership skills, business development, your personal growth, your online presence and so much more.

When deciding to hire a business coach, here are a few important questions to ask.

1. What are your core values? Make sure they line up with your beliefs.

2. What industry and size business do you specialize in? Ensure they are well-versed in your industry and experienced enough to fit your needs.

3. What do they do to stay on top of their industry? You want a coach who is always learning.

4. How will they hold you accountable? Like it or not, you need a coach who is going to listen to your goals and hold you accountable.

5. Speak with past clients. Don't be afraid to ask for references. It shows you are serious about starting this professional relationship and if a coach is hesitant to give you references, you need to look elsewhere.

Another major aspect to consider when hiring a business coach is to ensure there is chemistry between the two of you. You need to feel comfortable and vulnerable with your coach when talking about the not-so-great things about your business. Shortcomings and failures are a part of life, especially as a business owner. You need to be able to speak freely with your coach about your struggles, fears and concerns.

Before you invest in a business coach, you need to be serious about doing the work needed to achieve the results you desire. It's not always easy, but it can be worth it if you do your due diligence and select the right coach tailored to fit your individual needs. They should walk alongside you, hold you accountable and call you out when you make excuses. Becoming a new business owner can be scary, but when you hire the right business coach to help you stay on track, it can truly be a transformative experience for you, your personal development and your company.

Best of luck on your entrepreneurial journey.
