3 Ways Nonprofits Can Drive Real Value

Forbes Nonprofit Council

Nick Lynch - CEO @ Collidescope.io.

Nonprofit organizations play a crucial role in our society, addressing some of the most pressing social and environmental issues that we face. However, in order to create real impact, it's not enough to just support a "good" cause—nonprofits need to have a strong community, powerful storytelling and a clear strategy to drive engagement and value for all stakeholders.

Community Building

Community development is an essential component of nonprofit success. A robust community of supporters can provide vital resources to an organization, such as volunteers, donations and advocacy. Building a community starts with identifying and articulating your nonprofit's vision and values and then understanding who and where thought synergies exist for these values.

Everything now starts with social media when it comes to community building. Social media allows nonprofits to connect with potential supporters in a meaningful and engaging way. Social media channels such as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram allow nonprofits to share their mission, promote their events and connect with people who are aligned with their cause. It's important to create engaging and humanizing content that resonates with your target audience so that your audience is encouraged to share your content with their own networks.

Oftentimes, we forget that being "social" can also happen offline. Building community through in-person events is still one of the most effective ways to discover and build authentic connections. Events can range from fundraising galas to volunteer days to awareness campaigns—or even happy hours. By creating events that are engaging and allow for connections to strengthen, nonprofits can build relationships with their supporters and create a sense of community. Events can also be a great way to attract new supporters and build awareness around an organization's mission.

Storytelling

Storytelling is arguably the most powerful tool for nonprofits to communicate their mission and impact. Effective storytelling can inspire and motivate people to get involved. The key to effective storytelling is to create a clear and compelling narrative that the audience connects with on an emotional level.

A nonprofit's story should communicate its mission, impact and key performance indicators (KPIs). It should be told in a way that is relatable, tangible and engaging. One way to do this is to use real-life examples of people who have been impacted by your organization's work. These stories can be shared through various channels, such as social media, email newsletters and events. Ensuring the integration of the human element of your mission is critical in communicating impact and developing connections.

Strategy Management

Community building and impactful storytelling don't just happen naturally. Both require strategic planning, well-timed initiatives and optimized processes. Through strategy management and storytelling, nonprofit organizations can create a more valuable and workable plan, creating a higher likelihood of success. Organizations should ensure they are properly tracking and measuring their strategies and be transparent with their team on their progress.

When crafting a strategic plan, the essential first step is to set the organization's North Star: clearly define its mission, vision and values. These are vital markers that both guide you on your journey toward success and connect all stakeholders around one common purpose, making sure everyone understands what they're striving for. To ensure full alignment across the board, it's important to involve every stakeholder in building out these three cornerstones.

With clarity of mission, vision and values set in place, it's time to pave the pathway ahead with a strategic plan—a road map that outlines specific KPIs and strategies for success while measuring progress along the way. Your strategic plan must remain agile though. Regular check-ins and updates will ensure its relevance.

To effectively implement strategy management, it's important to have a system for tracking progress and measuring success. As I've touched on throughout this article, this involves tracking relevant KPIs, but I'd also recommend using a strategy management system to track processes on specific initiatives. There are many tools that support this, including Salesforce, WORKOPTI, Blackbaud and Microsoft Office 365. It is through a deep understanding of KPIs and priorities, crafting powerful messaging and storytelling solutions, and effectively managing strategies that nonprofits can make a significant impact.

Conclusion

It's important to have a culture of continuous improvement. This means regularly reviewing progress and making adjustments to your strategy and tactics as needed, and it requires a willingness to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances, as well as a commitment to learning from both successes and failures.

Implementing these three value drivers takes time and effort, but the benefits are clear. By focusing on community building, storytelling and strategy management, nonprofits can drive real, long-lasting change—for the organization, its supporters and the wider community. This creates a virtuous cycle of impact and engagement, which can drive even greater success in the future.
