I had gone through a few interviews with a company as I was evaluating a new sales role, and the entire interview process felt standard and professional (phone screen, in-person interview, tour of the branch, and next step would be to shadow a cold call). I wanted to see if you’d fight for the job.” What on earth!

My boss keeps pulling on my ponytail I started a new part-time job at a restaurant a few months ago. I was extremely shocked the first time it happened and thought I’d gotten my hair caught on something before Phil made a comment (it was a “h,i nice to see you” hair tug as while I was passing through the kitchen).

Let me assure you that I’m kidding. The reason most often provided by employers for using monitoring tools is to better understand how employees spend their time. Everyone appreciates a little peace of mind, right? That’s why I purchased a GPS tracker for my wife’s car as a Christmas present last year. It seemed like a great gift.

The idea of handing trophies to everyone, and not just to kids whose teams won a championship, came out of a belief that it would build self-esteem. Few things have as powerful an effect on any of us as hearing our boss tell us that they are proud of us, that our work is really good. It’s since been found to be completely misguided.

I reached out to 3 other people I worked with for the remaining 8 hours each week, and they increased my hours but I was still only around half time. Financially, I’m relieved I don’t need to turn off charitable donations, and I’ll be able to afford to travel to see my new grandson a few times a year.

Scooters are literally derived from kids’ toys. It only takes you on short trips – a few blocks at a time. In fact, if you live in SF they become a home screen app. You might check it all the time, before you walk a couple blocks. It’s the perfect example. That intent is valuable.

Using enneagrams in hiring. Recently a coworker told us that his spouse’s workplace uses enneagrams for hiring decisions. They like to have a certain amount of “numbers” making up their teams (e.g, if a “2” quits, they try to hire another qualified “2” for that position). Am I overthinking this?

Socializing without a screen was banned. You don't need to endure the harrowing commute, you can pick your kids up from school, you can have lunch with your loved ones, and you can still get your work done. Time will tell if it's a blip or a resurgence. Does the word fill you with dread? Maybe even nostalgia? That's crazy!"

This year I hired my friend’s recent college graduate kid to enter the data into the spreadsheet. As someone now involved in the child welfare system as a foster parent, I am hesitant to tell you to contact child services if there are any other ways to help Cora and her baby; the foster care system often makes things worse rather than better for kids. Conduct blind screenings and reduce unconscious biases during the process of resume review- usually, people with stereotypical “ethnic” names tend to send out more resumes before they get a callback, and resumes with female names receive less attention compared to men. Now, we're all spending more time in meetings (often video calls) than ever before. People are expected to sit in front of a screen for hours in the end. It’s reasonable for your boss to ask you to handle setting up the meeting so that she’s able to spend her time on other things. My advice to you is to see it as an advantage because it means you can pick the meeting time based on what works best for you rather than your boss always controlling that. Yes, you’re in the wrong.
